Neighborhood restaurant Seven Hills is seeing stars

Our server was particularly enthusiastic about the mushroom tortelli ($19), where the gossamer packets of pasta were plumped with ricotta and surrounded by a mushroom sauce with a judicious addition of seven-year aged balsamico that added a complex sweetness that enhanced everything around it. Kale tagliatelle ($20) was precisely cooked, with the tangle of green noodles surrounded by a beef, duck and pork Bolognese smoothed with cream. I had probably a dozen versions of Bolognese sauce on a recent trip to Italy, and this beat them all.

Set among the Seven-hills of San Francisco is well-executed, refined, Cal-Italian cuisine found at Seven Hills.

Zagat: #1 Italian Restaurant for food in all of the San Francisco Bay Area for 2012

Creative farm-to-table cuisine inspired by Rome (a seven-hilled city like SF) includes amazing housemade giant raviolis at this darling, intimate Nob Hill trattoria that also offers an interesting selection of well-priced wines chosen by two master sommeliers; the caliber of cooking is comparable to more expensive places, plus a lively noise level and welcoming servers help create a friendly atmosphere.

#90 Raviolo Uovo di San Domenco: We'll let SF Weekly food critic Jonathan Kauffman explain this take on the classic egg-filled raviolo: The pasta "is so translucent it barely tints the deep green of the spinach-ricotta filling ... In an age of sous-vide eggs and hydrocolloid-gelled juices, the raviolo uovo is a reminder that old-fashioned cooking of the most refined kind can produce miracles and surprises, too."

LA Times Review

The house-made tortelli with wild mushrooms ($21), sauced with brown butter and thyme, were light and silky, but left me lusting after my neighbor's country-style pork chop with duck fat-roasted potatoes ($27).

Trip Advisor: 4.5 Stars

This is a MUST for anyone who loves authentic Italian food and great atmosphere. A short cab ride from Union Square and a welcome and service which we have not had bettered for many years. [...] Six Stars out of Five :-)

Yelp: 4.5 Stars

This is my new favorite restaurant.I question what I have been doing with my life before Seven Hills. I went for Friday date night, and everything was absolutely perfect. [...] The Ravioli Uovo is to die for. I can say with confidence that it is the single best thing I've eaten all year. [...] The list of purveyors for Seven Hills is respectable, and I admire that commitment to responsible food. Lucky me, and lucky SF, for having Seven Hills.

Open Table: 4.5 Stars

After reading many positive reviews, we decided to check it out ourselves during a recent visit to San Francisco. We were not disappointed. The food is fantastic. Very reminiscent of an unforgettable dining experience in Florence we had a few years back. You must try the Ravioli Uovo.

SF Gate: Bay Area's top Italian restaurant

For [...] Seven Hills, that food rating placed them fourth in the entire Bay Area, behind only Gary Danko, the French Laundry and Kiss –and ahead of every other restaurant in the book. It also coronated them as the Bay Area’s top Italian restaurant, ahead of runners-up Acquerello, Delfina and La Ciccia.
